Choosing a REALTOR®
The McCue Mortgage Company recommends that you use a REALTOR® when you buy or sell a home. You can ask one of our mortgage experts to recommend a REALTOR® or you can use our REALTOR® partner link to Connecticut Association of Realtors to help you search for a REALTOR® in your area.
In selecting a real estate agent, it is important that you choose one who has the REALTOR® designation.
There is one basic difference between a REALTOR® and a real estate agent. A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of REALTOR® and must subscribe to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. We recommended you work with a REALTOR® so you have an experienced person working to protect you and get you the best deal on one of the largest and most important transactions of your life.
When choosing a REALTOR® to represent you, it’s a good idea to interview candidates and choose the one you will feel most comfortable working with. Here are some topics you may want to ask about:
- How long have they been in the business?
New may mean more personalized service, but long may mean more experience. If they’re new, are they part of a team so they have a good support network in their office?
- How many properties have they sold in the last year?
Are they a go getter or do they wait for business to come to them?
- The location of the properties they’ve sold.
You want them to be familiar with the area in which you are buying and selling.
- Have them explain how the commission structure will work for your transaction.
REALTORs® do a lot of work throughout the buying process, including qualifying homes for you to see, showing those homes, helping you decide to take action on a property, scheduling inspections, negotiating on your behalf and much more. You should discuss how the REALTOR® is going to be paid for all the work done on your behalf.
- Gain an understanding of their role.
Are they strictly a buyer representative, do they list and sell? How many of each do they average per year?
- Ask for a couple references.
Of course if a McCue mortgage expert sent you to them, have confidence that they are a pro!
